For his third LP, When I’m Alone I Cry, issued by Motown in 1964, Marvin Gaye presented himself in the role of a big band singer. The set includes several pop/jazz standards, and Gaye himself requested to sing two of the songs from Billie Holiday’s classic next-to-last album, Lady in Satin, “I’ll Be Around” and “You’ve Changed.” With brooding vocals, and arrangements by such big names as Melba Liston, Jerome Richardson and Ernie Wilkins, the album showed us a deeper artist, presaging the mature Marvin later heard on Vulnerable, and remains an essential piece of the man’s extensive discography.
