One of the finest LPs to come out of the “girl group” heyday by underrated female soul singer Martha Reeves. Dance Party marked the band’s third album and, much like The Miracles’ Mickey’s Monkey, it mainly consisted of dance tunes. It featured the group’s 1964 landmark single, “Dancing in the Street”, their follow-up smash, “Wild One”, and the hit “Nowhere to Run” and its B-side, “Motoring”. The album was mostly produced by William “Mickey” Stevenson with several nods from Holland-Dozier-Holland. “Dancing in the Street”, an all-time classic of the era, became one of Motown’s most emblematic tunes, and the group’s earliest signature song. “Dancing in the Street” reached #2 on the 1964 Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song was covered by many artists like The Mamas & The Papas, Van Halen, the duet of David Bowie & Mick Jagger, The Kinks, Grateful Dead, and Little Richard, among others.
