Changes & Things happily testifies to the values that established Sam Jones’ reputation. The band here is strictly first-rate, comprised of veterans Slide Hampton on trombone, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Barry Harris on piano, and his Cannonball bandmate Louis Hayes on drums, along with young tenor sax hotshot Bob Berg, who was 26 at the time of this recording. Together they hit on a swinging accord that feels good while delivering plenty of soloistic sparks along the way.
